How to Improve Your Home Wi-Fi

Start by moving your router to a central position in your home, ideally on a shelf or table rather than on the floor. Keep it away from microwaves, cordless phones, baby monitors, thick walls, and metal surfaces. Even moving your router a few metres can make a noticeable difference.

Restart your router regularly — once a month clears cached data, refreshes your connection, and often improves performance.

Use the 5GHz band for speed-hungry devices. Connect your streaming TV, gaming console, and video call devices to the 5GHz network. Reserve 2.4GHz for smart home devices and anything at the edge of your coverage.

For larger homes, properties with thick walls, or anyone who wants seamless whole-home coverage, a mesh Wi-Fi system is the gold standard solution. Mesh systems use multiple access points placed around your home to create a single, seamless Wi-Fi network. Mesh systems typically cost between £100–£300 depending on the number of nodes and coverage area. Use a Wired Connection Where Possible

For devices that don't move — desktop computers, smart TVs, games consoles — a wired Ethernet connection is always faster and more reliable than Wi-Fi. Powerline adapters offer a middle ground, using your home's electrical wiring to carry a network signal without running cables through walls.

Securing Your Home Network

Change your default router password immediately — every router ships with a default admin password that is publicly known. Make sure you're using WPA3 or WPA2 encryption. Set up a guest network for visitors to keep your main network isolated. Keep your router firmware updated to patch security vulnerabilities.
